“140 Nebraska Education Leaders to Follow”
This is the name of the article and the name of the list to which I was recently selected. Took me a little by suprise as I fail to see, in the grand scheme of things, my significance in cyber-space.
Twitter came along in 2006 on the heels of Facebook and at the forefront of many other web based tools for people to use or join; a space where they can exist, create, inspire, be inspired, or simply just connect. A space where they feel like they belong to something greater than themselves.
Love it or hate it, Twitter is one of the most powerful professional development tools in the field of education because of the power and ability to connect. Kevin Honeycutt @kevinhoneycutt , whom I consider to be true genius, once said in a keynote address, “I am not a genius, I am connected”. The power to connect with, literally, thousands of minds with 140 characters has power and reach far beyond anything we could have imagined a decade ago.
So, if you are not attempting to connect to your profession or to your world through a social media source, you should be. Give it a try, dip your toes in the water or just jump right in. Have a friend or colleague help you navigate the start-up of your new adventure. Don’t be afraid of the #hashtags and really you don’t have to understand or “get it” at first, but once the lightbulb kicks on you will question what it was that took you so long to join.
