{"id":2299,"date":"2020-03-25T15:59:02","date_gmt":"2020-03-25T20:59:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.cune.edu\/matthewphillips\/?p=2299"},"modified":"2023-02-02T09:44:18","modified_gmt":"2023-02-02T15:44:18","slug":"o-happy-virginity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.cune.edu\/matthewphillips\/2020\/03\/25\/o-happy-virginity\/","title":{"rendered":"Happy Virginity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;O happy virginity, which humility adorns; o happy humility, which virginity honors.\u00a0 Humility adorns virginity, so that it might not have pride.\u00a0 Virginity honors humility, so that it may not be despised.\u00a0 Therefore, virginity is humble, so that it may not be exalted.&#8221; Innocent III, Sermo XXVII. <em>In solemnitate Assumptionis Gloriosissimae Sem<\/em><em>per Virginis Mariae<\/em>, PL 217:578 [My translation]<\/p>\n<p>Pope Innocent III comments on the Angel Gabriel&#8217;s proclamation to the Blessed Virgin Mary and her response: &#8220;Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word.&#8221; (Luke 1:38).\u00a0 \u00a0He is following the devotion expressed to Mary during the twelfth century.\u00a0 The Virgin conceives and later births the God-man.\u00a0 However, the Lord also blessed her with the grace of multiple virtues.\u00a0 Here, the Virgin expresses her great humility and Innocent explains how well the two fit together in her body and soul. Read how Bernard of Clairvaux described her about 60 years earlier than Innocent III:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2303\" style=\"width: 341px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.cune.edu\/matthewphillips\/files\/2020\/03\/Annunciation-Medieval.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2303\" class=\" wp-image-2303\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.cune.edu\/matthewphillips\/files\/2020\/03\/Annunciation-Medieval.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"331\" height=\"412\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2303\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">https:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/toah\/works-of-art\/1982.175\/<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;How gracious is the union of virginity and humility! A soul in whom humility embellishes virginity and virginity ennobles humility finds no little favor with God.\u00a0 Imagine then how much more worthy of reverence must she have been whose humility was raised by motherhood and whose virginity consecrated by her childbearing.\u00a0 You are told that she is a virgin.\u00a0 You are told that she is humble.\u00a0 If you are not able to imitate the virginity of this humble maid, then imitate the humility of the virgin maid.\u00a0 <strong>Virginity is a praiseworthy virtue, but humility is by far the most necessary<\/strong>.&#8221; Bernard of Clairvaux, <em>Homily<\/em> I.5 in <em>Homilies in Praise of the Blessed Virgin Mary<\/em>, trans. Marie-Bernard Said (Kalamazoo: Cistercian, 1993), 9.
