It will often be exercised when wrong, but better so than not to be exercised at all. I like a little rebellion now and then. It is like a storm in the Atmosphere.&#8221;*<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.cune.edu\/matthewphillips\/files\/2014\/06\/cropped-thomas-jefferson-2nd-amendment.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-862 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.cune.edu\/matthewphillips\/files\/2014\/06\/cropped-thomas-jefferson-2nd-amendment-300x118.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"663\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp.cune.edu\/matthewphillips\/files\/2014\/06\/cropped-thomas-jefferson-2nd-amendment-300x118.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wp.cune.edu\/matthewphillips\/files\/2014\/06\/cropped-thomas-jefferson-2nd-amendment-500x197.jpg 500w, https:\/\/wp.cune.edu\/matthewphillips\/files\/2014\/06\/cropped-thomas-jefferson-2nd-amendment.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 663px) 100vw, 663px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thomas Jefferson wrote these sentences in a letter to Abigail Adams in February 1787 during his\u00a0 in Paris as Minister to France.\u00a0 Jefferson is referring to the events known as Shays&#8217; Rebellion here.\u00a0 Jefferson states that he hopes the rebels were pardoned, then moved on to other matters.\u00a0 Later in the same year, Jefferson wrote to William Stephens Smith (John and Abigail Adams&#8217; son in law) and expressed similar thoughts about the spirit of resistance.\u00a0 He pointed out that the 13 States had existed for 11 years and only this one rebellion took place.\u00a0 Jefferson then concluded famously:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">And what country can preserve it\u2019s liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them.
