{"id":2728,"date":"2021-10-08T08:56:34","date_gmt":"2021-10-08T13:56:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.cune.edu\/matthewphillips\/?p=2728"},"modified":"2022-08-17T14:35:13","modified_gmt":"2022-08-17T19:35:13","slug":"the-laws-of-tyrants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.cune.edu\/matthewphillips\/2021\/10\/08\/the-laws-of-tyrants\/","title":{"rendered":"The Laws of Tyrants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>Most foolish of all is the belief that everything decreed by the institutions or laws of a particular country is just.\u00a0<\/strong> What if the laws are the laws of tyrants?\u00a0 If the notorious Thirty* had wished to impose their laws on Athens, even if the entire population of Athens welcomed the tyrants&#8217; laws, should those laws on that account be considered just? No more, in my opinion, should that law be considered just which our interrex** passed, allowing the Dictator to execute with impunity any citizen he wished, even without trial.&#8221; \u00a0Marcus T. Cicero, <em>The Laws<\/em> 1. 42. in\u00a0 <em>The Republic and The Laws,<\/em> trans.
