Philosophy gives focus for
Long-Term Goals, which are guides for writing
Instructional Objectives from which
Specific Student Behavioral Objectives are designed

Example of a Long Range Goal
Be able to improvise and create music
Example of an Instructional Objective
1) It is more specific than a long range goal; 2) It is written in general behavioral terms 3) Describes the desired outcomes of a general comprehensive music program
By the end of the school hear the students will demonstrate comprehension of improvisation by improvising a melody using the pentatonic scale on a barred instrument
Example of a Specific Behavorial Objective (There are 3 Parts)
1) What the learner will do 2) Under what conditions they will do it 3) How well they are expected to do (assessment)
(1) The students will demonstrate keeping a steady beat by modeling the teacher and playing rhythm sticks (2) while listening to a recording of “Brahms’ Lullaby” (3) for 1 minute with 75% accuracy as assessed by teacher listening and observation.
Note: It is necessary to vary the length of time a student will maintain steady beat according to ability/grade level of the student.
