Use the Internet or go to the library and gather information about Zoltán Kodály.
Come to class and be prepared to share facts about Kodaly’s life, views on music education, and how he put his views into practice in the music classroom.
Consider the following rubric:
- Discover Biographical Information
- Discover other musicians, educators, or musicologists with whom he worked
- Be prepared to discuss why he felt a need to develop a plan for music education. In other words, what did he see that was lacking?
- Discover who did he believed should have access to music education?
- Be prepared to discuss Kodály’s beliefs with regards to how music affects the personality, intellect, emotions, and human development. When did he feel music education should begin?
- Be prepared to discuss the following principles used by Kodály: solfege, rhythm syllables, hand signing (include the source), and movable “Do”
- Be prepared to discuss iscuss his basic philosophy of music education with respect to:
- Who is capable of developing music literacy
- His view on singing
- His views on folks songs and their use in music education
- How music should fit into a school’s curriculum
