  1. Write a paper on classroom management and motivation.
  1. The purpose of the paper is for you to develop a deeper understanding of classroom management and motivational strategies and to have a resource for your teaching toolbox.
  1. The length of the paper should be a minimum of 8 pages in length. Resources/bibliography should be listed on the last page. This page does not count in the total number of pages for your paper.
  1. The resources for your paper may include the Campbell text, the PowerPoint from our guest speaker, and any other resources on classroom management from the library or reliable online sources. Wikipedia may not be used as one of your resources.
  1. From the PowerPoint discuss the following:
  1. Challenges that impact behavior
  2. The A B C Model on slide 6: Reminder – you do not have the power to change B (The behavior). Therefore, what is the importance of A and how does an effective A strategy impact the need for C?
  3. Describe what the guest speaker means by Behavior 101
  4. Reflect on the quotes on slide 8. What do these quotes say about the responsibility of the teacher?
  5. Why is building relationships with students important?
  6. Describe evidence based behavior practices
  7. Discuss what the speaker said about developing classroom/group expectations (Slide 16). How are expectations different than developing classroom/group procedures (Slide 19)?
  8. Why is the model on slide 17 as important for teaching behavior as it is for teaching skills in a particular curricular area? Discuss.
  9. Reflect on John Herner’s quote (Slide 19). From your experience as a student, what do teachers typically do when it comes to behavior? What should we do?
  10. Discuss why it is important to encourage expected behavior and the results of a 4:1 ratio of positive to negative comments. Why is it difficult to focus on the positive and why is it easy to see the negative?
  11. Discuss the importance of acknowledging expected behavior and discuss why?
  12. Discuss the strategies a teacher should use in discouraging inappropriate behavior
  13. Describe active supervision. What does it look like in the classroom?
  14. What is the value in designing a lesson in such a way that it gives students the opportunity to respond. What are some strategies for encouraging student responses?
  15. Discuss the importance of designing lessons in ways that give students the opportunity to make choices.
  16. How might task difficulty affect behavior in the classroom? What strategies should a teacher consider?
  17. Discuss what a teacher might do when preventative strategies have failed. What adult behaviors can cause a student’s behavior to escalate?  Discuss
  18. What are effective adult intervention strategies? Discuss.
  19. What is the difference between accommodations and modifications? What are some effective accommodations that can be used?
  1. From the Campbell Text discuss the following:
  1. The three sources of motivation
  2. Reflect on how Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs might impact behavior
  3. Discuss your personal opinion on using competition as a motivator
  4. Discuss the effectiveness of using logical consequences to mediate behavior
  5. Discuss your personal opinion on the method of identifying a “Special Person” as described in the text
  1. Discuss the effectiveness of using punishment as a means for promoting changes in behavior. Does it work? Why or why not?
  1. Discuss the effectiveness of giving rewards for meeting behavior goals.   Does it work? Why or why not?
